If your business model includes retail, you will eventually have to present your collection to buyers, for whole sales purposes. The buyers will need all the product information necessary, to place an order. Together with the line sheet you will provide an introduction email or letter, aka your pitch, and a look book. The look book should show your spirit, the vibe of your products and brand, and the line sheet should make the buying job as smooth as possible.
What is a line sheet?
The actual line sheet is a document with your entire line information, delivery dates and contact info. This document should in a glance be easy to read, be understandable and have all the product information on it. Literally it should make buying easy, and in the end selling easy. If your collection is somewhat bigger, then consider grouping your products in product groups. Most of the times, the most expensive product category goes first. So lets say your jackets are the most expensive category, then your bottoms, your midlayers and last your tops and accessories. There should also be a logical price structure, and there too, place the most expensive product first.
Keep every page as clean as you can, some buyers want to take notes on every product, and they need the space to do that. Plus a cluttered line sheet is just going to be confusing and hard to work with.
Have in mind that some buyers won’t be able to meet with you in person to see the collection. This means they will have to depend on the information in your line sheet to make a decision on buying your line or not. The more details and clear content the better. BUT, it should be visually appealing and in sync with your brands graphical profile! Buyers usually have many line sheets and orderforms, and you want yours to stand out.
This information is extremely delicate and important for you and your buyers, so don’t hand the line sheet out to everyone that is not serious on buying your line. Your business “secrets” and pricing strategies are in the line sheet and can easily be knocked off.
When handing over the line sheet you should also include an order form. You don’t just want them to see what you have to offer, you want them to BUY your collection. Have organised, pre-filled order forms to make the ordering process as smooth as possible.
If you nail this you have bigger chances of getting your orders in.
